Flashback: Paris, 2001

In 2001, as a kick-off to my self-employment, I went to Europe for 2 months. One of my favorite cities was, to no surprise, Paris, which rightfully is considered a “world capital.” Not much to say, just here are some snaps from those few days I spent in the City of Light.

I would go back in a second.

Horses and Market: Guatemala, 2004

Shot back in 2004, this is in Guatemala, on a visit to my brother who was serving in the Peace Corps at the time. Market = Leica M6TTL and 28/2. Horses = Leica M6TTL and 21/2.8.

Mondo Lucha, 2011

There is an amazing event in Milwaukee called Mondo Lucha. It is tights, knee-pads, tassels, flying drop-kicks, feather boas, sequined masks and rock-n-roll. It is a loud crowd, invigorating music, high drama and high heels. It is luchador-style all-star wrestling, live music and burlesque performers. Mondo Lucha is 3 hours you’re not likely to forget.

Audubon Days, Mayville with the D200+24mm/2.8

This past Sunday I went out to Mayville, WI – my hometown – to take in the last day of Audubon Days—Mayville’s Fall Festival. It’s 2 1/2 days of music and activities and markets and games and a parade. It was a beautiful day and I committed to keeping my photo-gear simple. I took my Leica M6TTL and 28/2 lens and my Nikon D200 and 24mm/2.8 lens. Below is a selection of the photos I made with the D200–mainly of my family and the parade.

The painter depicted is Todd Schabel and you should really check out his work. What a talented fellow! Here’s his website. In the craft show, I also saw a woman making what she called “B.A.D. Azz Designs“–spunky and funky bits for girls. I can’t cling close to that name, but she does make some neat hats and such. Also shown below are intrepid reporter Megan Sheridan and two of the fine, bearded musicians of the Trusty Knife!

Test Drive: Olympus E-P3

A friend of mine, a really nice fellow indeed, recently lent his newly acquired Olympus E-P3 with 17mm/f2.8 lens. What an amazing little camera–a great weight to it, very responsive AF, and a nice size – not too small, not too big. I had the camera for a week, but didn’t get to use it as often as I’d hoped. Still, I did get a few nice snap-shot opportunities and was real happy with the results. Here’s a short list of some particular things I noticed about the camera.

Olympus E-P3…

NOT SO TO MY LIKING

-easy to accidentally hit video start-and-stop button.

-when touch-screen is active, easy to accidentally take photos

-high ISOs are OK, but not great

-the blue LED on/off indicator is really bright, wish I could turn it off

-I still wish there was an incorporated viewfinder and not just an accessory

-wish you could bounce the flash

VERY MUCH TO MY LIKING

-like the thumb-wheel

-screen is really nice and bright

-like the touch-screen focus, but not sure how useful it actually is

-art filters are more clever than I thought

-low ISOs are really nice

-like the function buttons, though haven’t explored their possibilities

+assigned Fn2 to “depth of field preview”

-17mm/2.8 seems like a really nice, sharp lens; makes for a compact kit

-AF is FAST

-impressed by the depth of the custom functions–lots of options there, such as setting your preferred dpi!

-really like the weight and feel of the camera.
